Restalyne Refyne Defyne

Restylane Family of Fillers Grows: Introducing Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne

Product line: Restylane Refyne and Restylane Defyne. (Both injectables were originally approved in Europe in 2010 under the name Emervel.)

Class: Next generation hyaluronic acid (HA)-based soft tissue or dermal filler. They are designed with XpresHAn technology which allows for customized flexibility and support. The gels can flex within your skin for a more natural look and help maintain expressions in motion.

Approved cosmetic uses: Restylane Refyne is approved for the treatment of moderate-to-severe facial wrinkles and folds such as smile lines (nasolabial folds) for those 21 and older. Restylane Defyne is approved for the same indications and age group, but it provides more support for deeper lines and folds.

Mode of action: All Restylane products are HA-based fillers. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in all mammals, though production tends to deplete with age. Restylane replaces HA, filling in or volumizing wrinkles and folds.

Results: Results with Refyne and Defyne may last up to 12 months.

Side Effects: Temporary injection site responses such as redness, swelling, bruising, lump/bump formation and/or pain/tenderness.

Cost: Restylane cost varies based on the areas being treated and the location of the practice. Refyne and Defyne will likely cost more than other Restylane family members as they last longer.

Other HA fillers:

Injection pain (1-5 scale, with 5 being the most pain): 1.5

Note: With topical numbing before treatment, pain is minimal. (Pain is subjective, and varies from person to person.)

Popularity: HA-based fillers are the second most popular type of minimally invasive cosmetic procedure, according to American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
