Bromelain – Can It Help You Heal?
Found in the stem of pineapples, Bromelain is an enzyme that may reduce pain, swelling, inflammation and platelet aggregation, or "sticky blood," after your facial rejuvenation procedure. Platelet aggregation can increase your risk of developing blood clots after surgery. Bromelain may also enhance the effects of antibiotics which are often necessary to stave off infection following your surgical procedure.
In one well-publicized study, boxers who took bromelain supplements healed twice as fast as boxers who did not. If you’re interested in using bromelain during your recovery from a cosmetic procedure, be sure to ask your surgeon about it at your consultation or preop appointment.
Bromelain is available in many forms, but may be more effective when taken orally. If your surgeon recommends bromelain or another product such as Arnica Montana to aid in your recovery, he or she will likely have suggestions about the brand, the dosage and the form in which it should be taken. Always follow the dosing instructions on the product label.
