Date Night 2.0

How to look good on a (Skype) date

It’s date night — only your date is across the country.

Instead of waiting for the doorbell to ring, you’re logging onto your computer. Skype, FaceTime and other video-chatting applications are making it possible for many long-distance relationships to work long-term, but there’s a catch.

You have to look good when you’re video chatting. Yes, many singles may mourn the loss of the days when they could lounge around in pajamas with a restorative mud facial mask and chat away while the person on the receiving end of the phone was none the wiser.

But looking your best while video-chatting doesn’t need to be complicated or expensive.

Here’s how to look good on a Skype date:

Keep Your Chin Up

These video cameras often focus on the lower-third of the face, and this can make anyone look like they have a double chin. Avoid this by resting your chin on your hand while chatting. Also, make sure your camera is eye-level or even a little bit higher. Placing your laptop on your lap to chat is rarely flattering.

Show Yourself in the Right Light

Aim natural light or a lamp straight at your face from behind the camera or computer. If the light source is coming from behind, your face will look too dark.

Go Natural

Some of these programs make colors seem even bolder than they are. Don’t overdo your make-up for a Skype chat. Choose a lightly tinted moisturizer to keep your skin tone even, along with some clear gloss for your lips. (If you have any blemishes, make sure they are covered up.)

Some of the same rules apply regardless of where the date takes place — don’t forget to smile and  make eye contact.
